In celebration of my 1/4 part Irish roots I thought I would dedicate a post to one of the most fun days of the year, St. Patrick's Day! St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17th in honour of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. However, lucky for us, it's not only celebrated in Ireland. It's also celebrated in Great Britain, Canada, The United States, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia (and anywhere else the Irish my reside I'm sure).
So here are some fun facts about St. Patrick's Day!
So here are some fun facts about St. Patrick's Day!
St. Patrick was not born in Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain, kidnapped into slavery and brought to Ireland.
St. Patrick used the shamrock (three leaved plant also called clover) to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish in his attempts to convert them to Christianity.
The four-leaf clover (shamrock) is a symbol of good luck that dates back to biblical times. It is believed that when Eve was cast out of the Garden of Eden she took a four-leaf clover to remind her of Eden's paradise.
Each of the leaves on the four-leaf clover has a specific meaning -- faith, hope, love & luck.
The chances of finding a four-leaf clover are 1 in 10,000.
The colour "green" has been associated with Ireland since the 1640's.
There is no taste difference between "green" beer and regular beer, but it sure looks cool!
One of the oldest and largest St. Patrick's Day parades is held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada every year.
The city flag of Montreal, Quebec has a shamrock pictured in its lower-right quadrant.
The Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team was known as the Toronto St. Patricks from 1919 to 1927 and wore green jerseys. They were probably much luckier during this time.
The phrase, "Kiss me! I'm Irish!" most likely comes from the famous legend of the Blarney Stone. It is said that whoever kisses the Blarney Stone is given the gift of eloquence (the ability to speak beautifully). Perhaps it's time I visit this Blarney Stone ...
The Leprechaun, in folklore, is a type of fairy who lives in solitary mending shoes & hoarding his coins in a pot at the end of the rainbow. If captured by a human, the leprechaun has the ability to grant three wishes in exchange for their freedom.
Leprechauns aren't necessarily cute & funny like the one depicted in the "Lucky Charms" commercials. They are mischievous and love playing practical jokes on people. They'll stop at nothing to ensure a human doesn't catch 'em.
The person who created today's Google characters needs to be fired. They look absolutely nothing like music playing, dancing shamrocks. Really. WTF?

So far today has been a rather fun St. Patrick's Day!
Here at my workplace, in true Leprechaun form, my boss and I coloured and cut out a ton of little shamrocks & then hid behind a co-worker's cubicle waiting for the precise & perfect moment to throw them over into his area screaming, "LUCK OF THE IRISH!". His sudden jump and screams were quite magical ...
My daughter, who dressed my two-year old grandson from head to toe in green, and her best friend's puppy with a great big green bow, has sent me several St. Patty's Day inspired photos to keep me smiling and laughing. Little boys look very cute in white & green striped leggings. Puppies are just cute period!
And it's only 3 o'clock ....
LET THE FESTIVITIES CONTINUE ......
Happy St. Patty's Day, everyone!
