I am a dog person. There is no denying it. In my lifetime I have enjoyed the company of many pets (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, birds, and even skunks) but none have brought me more joy than the dogs I have bonded with. Don't misunderstand - I love all animals! I see the beauty in all of the creatures we are so lucky to share the earth with, but if I was forced to choose only one it would have to be a dog!
I know a lot of cat people. In fact, my daily Facebook feed is filled with pictures and videos of cats in all their kitty glory. I see cats jumping, pouncing, playing, chasing and intimidating man's best friend - the dog. It seems I have befriended more cat people than dog people. And apparently two bird people.
It's hard for me sometimes to understand cat people. Dogs are obedient, trustworthy, and faithful. Cats are independent, inquisitive, and love you on their own terms. Of course, die hard cat people would probably pick different attributes to describe their feline friends. Yes, I know they are cute, cuddly and playful too. However, I also know there is no best selling book entitled, "How to Know Your Dog is Plotting to Kill You". Come on all you cat people - can you say the same?
In as much as I don't understand cat people and certainly like to make fun of them I do understand that as people we are all different, and there are reasons why some people prefer dogs and some cats. I jumped for joy when I realized there has actually been some serious research done on the topic. The findings below are not only interesting but make me think that perhaps I really am a cat person in disguise!
DOG PEOPLE CAT PEOPLE
- more lively, energetic & outgoing - introverted
- more likely to follow rules - non-conformists
- more agreeable - neurotic
- more conscientious - easy going & aloof
Now you may be thinking, "Gee, cat people are sounding pretty awful!", but the research also shows that cat people tend to be more open-minded, more intelligent and more creative than their dog people counterparts. I need to hang my head in shame at the "more intelligent" finding. That's really going to give us dog lovers a bad rap.
It does make sense though that cats would be more intelligent than dogs. I mean, their little brains must be in constant overdrive plotting all the ways to kill their owners (or their subordinates as the cats would like to call them). So I will take solace in this fact! I may not be so smart but at least I don't have to worry about a midnight trip down the stairs.
And yes, my tail is now wagging!
